EV Charging: Load Management Systems

A crucial element to a commercial or residential apartment EV charging project is the Load Management System.

What is an EV Charging Load Management System?

The purpose of these systems is to monitor the incoming mains and can control the charge speed of all devices on the network to ensure that the EV charging load doesn’t exceed the power capacity available to the building.

These systems will usually require a Current Transformer (CT) to be installed on the incoming mains, so the software can monitor the power available to the building in real time. The software will then communicate with ALL of the chargers on the network and, where necessary, dynamically adjusting their charge speed to ensure the power load to the chargers remains within the capacity of the building.

To communicate with the chargers, Load Management Systems, can use various methods of communicate including Wifi, Ethernet, Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), Power Line Communications (PLC), RS485 or Modbus.
